St George's Caye is located about 20 minutes by boat from Belize City. The barrier reef is within eyesight from the island, and the surrounding waters are absolutely pristine. The island has a rich and colorful history. It was first populated by buccaneers. The British made it the capital of the settlement between 1650 and 1784. The decisive battle for control of Belize was fought here between the Baymen and the Spaniards on the 10th of September, 1798. This day is historically known as "The Battle Of St. George's Caye" and is celebrated as a national holiday each year on the 10th of September.
