Blue Hole National Park is a national park located about 12 miles southeast of Belmopan on the Hummingbird Highway, in the Cayo District. The park comprises some 575 acres of lush forests that includes "St. Hermans" and "Crystal Cave" cave systems, and a blue pool from which the name of the park is derived.
The pool is a major recreational spot attracting thousands of visitors during the summer months. The pool is actually a karst sinkhole that is approximately 25 feet deep, through which water on it's way from a tributary to the Sibun River emerges into a gorgeous saphire blue pool. The pool overuns to form a short stream that leads the water into a large underwater cavern.
St. Herman's Cave and Crystal Cave are also an interesting part of the park. These caves have significant archaeological importance as the Maya used them during the Classic Period. Most of the artifacts have been removed by the Department of Archaeology, however some have been left behind, such as a skull that is embedded in the crystals in Crystal Cave and some pieces of pottery in St. Herman's Cave.
